Volunteers for XRDS

XRDS, ACM’s flagship student publication, is seeking volunteers. If you are a graduate student located in the U.S. or abroad who is interested in cutting-edge research in computer science and viewpoints on technology's impact on the world today, we want you! XRDS needs feature and department editors to support a strong, positive, and inclusive community of students interested in computing.

Feature editors have three primary responsibilities: edit submitted feature articles, lead issues with guest editors, and lead a longer-term project. Department editors are the writers responsible for the columns in each issue of the quarterly magazine. Both roles require tenacity, creativity, and editorial and writing skills. Candidates should be fluent in written English.

To apply, please send your CV to [email protected], along with a short 150-word personal statement, and include the subject line "XRDS Volunteer."

French ACM SIGOPS Chapter
Paris, France

The 10th edition of the Winter School organised by the French ACM SIGOPS Chapter, in collaboration with the GDR Distributed Networks and Systems (RSD), took place at Le Pleynet, near Grenoble. This anniversary edition brought together 56 participants, including 45 PhD students, to discuss current topics in distributed networks and systems, in a setting conducive to scientific exchange.

As in previous years, the program was organised into seven thematic sessions, each structured around a keynote lecture followed by short presentations by PhD students. The topics covered included the energy efficiency of distributed systems (Anne-Cécile Orgerie, CNRS, Irisa), storage and the cloud (Jalil Boukhobza, LabSTICC, ENSTA), low-power wide-area networks (Martin Heusse, UGE, LIG), security in web browsers (Aurore Fass, Inria), the confidentiality of personal information (Tristan Allard, Univ. Rennes 1, Irisa), as well as the impact of machine learning models (Elisa Fromont, Univ. Rennes 1, Irisa) and large language models on systems and software engineering (Romain Robbes, Univ. of Bordeaux, LaBRI).

The PhD students’ presentations highlighted a wide variety of research and stimulated numerous discussions, covering scientific contributions, methodological choices and future research directions. This format encourages direct and constructive exchanges between early-career researchers and established experts.

Finally, informal moments helped to strengthen interactions and cohesion within the community, including a snowshoe outing and a Savoyard dinner.

ACM Case Studies

Written by leading domain experts for software engineers, ACM Case Studies provide an in-depth look at how software teams overcome specific challenges by implementing new technologies, adopting new practices, or a combination of both. Often through first-hand accounts, these pieces explore what the challenges were, the tools and techniques that were used to combat them, and the solution that was achieved.
